The DFA committee is soliciting papers nominations for the 2005 Diana
Forsythe Award.

The Diana Forsythe Award is sponsored by the American Medical
Informatics' People and Organizational Issues Working Group to honor
either a peer-reviewed AMIA conference paper, or a peer-reviewed article
published in JAMIA or other journals publishing medical
informatics-related content during the previous year, that best
exemplifies the spirit and scholarship of Diana Forsythe's work at the
intersection of medical informatics and the social sciences. To qualify
for this award, papers must be qualitative in nature and pertain to
medical informatics.

If you want to nominate a paper (your own or someone else's) for this
award, please send the bibliographic information and/or copy of the
paper to Madhu Reddy at mreddy@umr.edu. The deadline for submitting
nominations is April 30, 2005.

The award will be presented at the 2005 American Medical Informatics

Picking up on this thread, I want to point out what the Careers Committee
of the American Chemical Society is doing to inform people about careers
in science librarianship and chemical information.

1- Periodically at national meetings of the American Chemical Society
we present symposia on careers in chemical information. To make
these symposia as broad and inclusive as possible, we have speakers
on all aspects of science librarianship, and other information
careers. These symposia are aimed at students and at people in
mid-career who may be considering a career change.

2- We have mounted a web page: Some Resources on Careers in Chemical
Information:

3- We seek opportunites to speak at regional and local meetings of this
society when workshops are being presented on careers or alternate

Hello, colleagues.

We are looking at getting new shelving for our library, and the question
has come up as to whether or not we need "canopies" on the shelves. Our
current steel shelving has a canopy over each top shelf, which I always
assumed was needed for structural (and possibly aesthetic)
reasons. Possibly also keeps dust off the books? Possibly offers the
books some protection against total destruction if the sprinklers come on
(God forbid)? Is there any good reason to have or not to have
canopies? Any body have any experience with this question?
