Re: [UgaBYTES] Summary of week3

Hi Sylvia

I've been lurking quietly ... and I think this is a great summary.
Amazing discussion by all.

The one thing I would want to extend is the insurance metaphor. Networks
can be this (share resources and risk), but they are of course much
more. They are also communities that support learning and innovation ...
these things come easiest when you are connected to people confronted
with challenges similar to your own.

On the skepticism about subscription, I think the services a network can
offer make a big difference here. If a network is just a club of
friends, subscription is like to be low. But, if it is a club of friends
AND a way to get very useful things (e.g. services a telecentre can use
to serve its community or generate revenue, lower cost hardware /
software / connectivity, truly useful support), then subscriptions will
be high.

Finally, I want to call out the importance of 'networks of networks'.
The people who lead networks will benefit greatly from being connected
to each other ... learning together, coming up with innovative services
together, producing materials together, etc. This networking amongst
networks is, amongst other things, something telecentre.org can offer.

Congrats to all on this great discussion ...

- MS

PS. It would be great if some of these summaries could be further
synthesized after this event ... and then published. Incredibly useful
insights being generated.

CODEX COMMISSION ADOPTS MORE THAN 20 FOOD STANDARDS

Sets new guidelines on vitamin supplements; creates antimicrobial resistance taskforce

Rome/Geneva -- The Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) adopted more than 20 new and amended food standards during its annual meeting, the food standards body announced today. Among the measures adopted were guidelines on vitamin and mineral food supplements and a code of practice to minimize and contain antimicrobial resistance.

Some 120 countries were represented at this year's Codex session, plus the European Community, a member organization. Codex is an international food standards-setting body established by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO). It has 172 members, all of which are members of FAO or WHO or both.

Vitamin and mineral food supplements guidelines

The CAC adopted global guidelines for vitamin and mineral food supplements as one of its first decisions. The guidelines recommend labeling that contains information on maximum consumption levels of vitamin and mineral food supplements, assisting countries to increase consumer information, which will help consumers use them in a safe and effective way.

According to WHO, the guidelines ensure that consumers receive beneficial health effects from vitamins and minerals.

The guidelines say that people should be encouraged to select a balanced diet to get the sufficient amount of vitamins and minerals. Only in cases where food does not provide sufficient vitamins and minerals should supplements be used.

Antimicrobial resistance task force

Codex tentatively agreed to a task force addressing antimicrobial resistance. A formal decision is set for next year. WHO, FAO and the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) have developed guidelines for the prudent use of antimicrobials in treatment of human illnesses and animal production, which the task force will carry forward to ensure food safety.

Antimicrobial resistance had been debated for several years and agreement has been difficult because it involves collaboration from different sectors: animal health and production, human health and drug manufacturing. The new task force will bring all these sectors together and develop a holistic approach to this growing problem.

Resistance to antimicrobial drugs, such as antibiotics, is an emerging public heath problem caused by a number of factors, including the inappropriate use of antibiotics in humans; antibiotic treatment of illnesses in animals used for human consumption and, in some cases, to promote faster growth. The use of antimicrobials as pesticides is also a factor in antimicrobial resistance.

Resistant microorganisms developed in animals used for human consumption may be transmitted to humans mainly by contaminated food. For example, resistant strains of salmonella and other food-borne microorganisms are now frequently encountered, limiting the effective treatment of human infections, which in some cases can result in death.

In other decisions, the CAC decided to split the Codex Committee on Food Additives and Contaminants into separate committees beginning in 2007, in order to deal more effectively with each issue.

No standard planned on Parmesan cheese

On the issue of intellectual property concerns regarding the labelling and composition of Parmesan cheese, no consensus was reached and the CAC put the issue on hold allowing interested countries to continue consultations among themselves to seek a resolution of the issue. However, no date was set for the Commission to revisit this matter.

Dr Stuart Slorach, the out-going CAC Chairman, said: "This has been an extremely productive session. Even though only one year has passed since the last CAC meeting, we adopted over 20 standards which, when used appropriately, will better protect consumer health and improve their confidence in the products they consume . Moreover, we took important steps this week to involve partner organizations in the setting of these standards and to make the structure of Codex more efficient."

Elections at the 28th session of Codex resulted in the first ever CAC Chairman from an African country. Dr Claude Mosha of Tanzania was elected to the post for a term of one year and is eligible to stand for a second one-year term.

The CAC meeting ran from 4 July through 9 July

Subject: AM2005 - Travel advice, insurance and information - REMEMBER TRAVEL AND MEDICAL INSURANCE!

Summary: This mail contains general information about health and safety
around the GA. If you’re travelling before or after the GA more
information is given below.
Egypt is a friendly and safe country to travel – so relax and enjoy your
stay!
------------------------------------------------

Dear everybody,

The August Meeting is approaching and soon will medical students from
all the corners of the world begin their journey to Egypt.
Some might already be there to explore the country on beforehand.

I have started packing and I am extremely excited that I will leave this
Saturday for Egypt.
I bet you’re all excited as well and with every right – I have a feeling
that this will be one the best meetings ever!

In all this excitement there are some extremely important things to
consider before leaving.

Insurance:

* We strongly recommend that you obtain comprehensive travel and
medical insurance before travelling.

* Contact your insurer if you have had a previous health
condition, including mental illness, which may not be covered if it
recurs.

If any of you should choose to ignore this, and if you find yourself in
financial trouble as a consequence, then I wish to make it very clear to
you now that the Executive Board and the Organizing Committee can not
provide any financial assistance.

Hurghada and the AM2005
Hurghada is a very tourist-friendly place and considered very safe.
The Organizing committee is proud and committed to be taking good care
of you from arrival to departure!

As there are no endemic diseases in Hurghada, the sun itself is the most
the one that causes most health problems.
Come prepared for the heat. Use a high factor sun block and drink plenty
of water to guard against exposure and dehydration, which can result in
serious health problems.

In general tap water is not safe to drink. Bottled water is cheap and
readily available.

You will be accompanied by OC staff from arrival to departure so just
relax and enjoy – We’re sure that you will find Egypt a wonderful
country!

All the best and safe travels,

On behalf of the OC, the EB and the team of officials,

Yours,

Tamer Refaat and Andreas Rudkjøbing

Travelling in Egypt before or after the GA:
This contains basic information about travelling in Egypt and elsewhere.
Crime rates in Egypt are low and it’s considered a safe place to travel.
There are, however, some general precautions that are wise to follow.

Vaccinations and health:

* Contact your GP for medical advice about current inoculation
requirements, including Hepatitis A

* Contact your insurer if you have had a previous health
condition, including mental illness, which may not be covered if it
recurs.

General travel advice:
Egypt outside the tourist place can be a conservative society. You
should dress modestly and especially when visiting traditional areas
like mosques and souqs (markets). Women's clothes should cover their
legs and upper arms. Public displays of affection are frowned upon.
* Possession, use or trafficking in illegal drugs is a serious
offence and can, even for possession of small amounts, lead to long
prison sentences.

* Women are advised to take extra caution when travelling alone.

* It is becoming more common in Egypt for hotels and medical
facilities to seek payment in hard currency.

Other Tips:

1. Make sure you have a signed, valid passport and visas, if required.
Also, before you go, fill in the emergency information page of your
passport!

2. Read the Consular Information Sheets (and Public Announcements or
Travel Warnings, if applicable) for the Egypt.

3. Familiarize yourself with local laws and customs of the countries to
which you are travelling.

4. Make 2 copies of your passport identification page. This will
facilitate replacement if your passport is lost or stolen. Leave one
copy at home with friends or relatives. Carry the other with you in a
separate place from your passport.

5. Leave a copy of your itinerary with family or friends at home so that
you can be contacted in case of an emergency.

6. Do not leave your luggage unattended in public areas. Do not accept
packages from strangers.

7. To avoid being a target of crime, try not to wear conspicuous
clothing and expensive jewelry and do not carry excessive amounts of
money or unnecessary credit cards.

9. In order to avoid violating local laws, deal only with authorized
agents when you exchange money or purchase art or antiques.

10. If you get into trouble, contact your nearest Embassy.

Re: [UgaBYTES] Facilitator's opening remarks for week 3

Dear Participants,

Sunday's issues are quite important for Telecenter sustainability... The
professionalism- to me Telecenter management can be a professional of
itself, then Networks can develop certified courses to further this. Just
like ACCA-accountants, PMP-project professions.... Unlike other
professions, certification fees should be very low and should not be the
emphasis here. In this way we can be able to develop capacity in
Telecenters, while at the same time keeping Networks sustainable and the
ideology of Telecenter-ism strategically growing.

It is also true that the resource sharing mind and mutual agreement
between members within the Network will be quite relevant for
Sustainability of both Telecenters and the Networks.

The other thing is how to categorize membership without denying individual
members the right to develop their character, ability, innovation and
community responsibility, which is the true focus of Networks.

Equally Kenneth's issues for Networking sound exhaustive, which I believe
if done by Networks results can be immense. It would however the mandate
of each member Telecenter to account for the degree of community
integration in the periodical Network convensions to keep movement
focused.

Best Regards,
Sulah

Re: [UgaBYTES] Facilitator's opening remarks for week 3

Dear all,
Network calls for deep professional thaught. There
should be an agreement betwwen the server and the work
stations:
1. How many work stations can the server's resources
serve?
2. How long can the NOS's kernel sustain it?
3. what is the strenght or capacity of each work
station?
4. Is there any IP conflict amidst the workstations?
These are few quetions that one should ask to curtail
traffic and unfavourable results.
Sustainability comes in when you already have a good
network.
Are the telecenters ready to share resource(s)
(Information which is the baseline fot transformation);
Which is one of the advantages of network.
Network can go a long way to help telecenter(s) if
there is mutual agrement and the telecenter will inturn
serve her community better.

Subject: Invitation PreGA Workshops MM2006

Hey! Health Keepers!

The openning for the propositions for MM2006 PreGA Workshops it's now!

We want to invite you to participate in this new way of improving this
part of our meeting, and take it forward IFMSA

Besides of suggesting workshops for the event, you can get involved
directly working in our Theme Team to develop the sessions, and of
course, you may propose different topics for the workshops from what
we're planning.

MDGs Health Students Workshops & MM2006 PreGA IFMSA

When in the year 2000, leaders of 189 countries committed to achieve
eight millenium development goals; the Milennium campaign was born,
setting the year 2015 as deadline. A third of this time has already gone
by, and in order to keep the promise not only for the deadline but for
the people that need these changes to occur... we need to put in more
strength. Our strength. We are living in complex, changing times, full of
threats, challenges and opportunities. We have the real opportunity to
destroy ourselves, but also to reconstruct ourselves and give each one
the chance to live a fuller and more satisfactory life. Allow more
people to access the benefits of development. Our challenge is to work
toward this, to achieve a healthy, equal and generous humankind. Our
challenge is the Millenium Campaign.Ours is the biggest campaign of all
times, the chance for our grandchildren to live in a world where there
is no poverty, no continuous devastation of the ecosystem, no AIDS and
other diseases, plague, or gender issues.

As health students, we have a vocational commitment towards people's
wellbeing, and we have acquired (or are in the process of doing so ) the
necessary skills to achieve our goals. For this we feel the urge to
actively participate in this campaign, and invite more health students
to become a part of it. Young people from all over the world are working
on it, but there are many unaware of its existence.Taking advantage of
the fact that the biggest medical student event is taking place in Chile
in March 2006, we want to invite all health students in our country and
others, to share this effort, the challenge of our generation. From the
26th to the 28th of February, parallel to the preGA IFMSA affairs, a
cycle of workshops will be held, the YOUTH HEALTH FORUM, open to health
students and to preGA participants, with the aim of strenghening
Millenium Campaign among health students, by means of presenting many
related issues, discussing different approaches and strategies to help
improve the effectiveness of student work, working on acquirement of
skills for project development, and allowing the creation of networking
among different organizations.

Simultaneous to this workshop cycle and within the same physical space,
the exposition in stands of initiatives concerning MDGs. There will also
be chances, and time, to establish contacts and enroll in organizations
and projects that work for the achievement of MDGs.The idea is to make a
journey from theoretical aspects of the Millenium Campaign to practical
aspects.

This is our proposition:
Day 1 - Introduction to the Millenium Campaign. Getting to know every
one of the MDGs from different perspectives that involve health students
and youth in general.
Day 2 - Getting to know and discuss the possibilities of making a
difference for MDGs from the health area, through low cost and high
impact measures.
Day 3 - Sharing and developing skills that empower students iniciatives,
and the building of networks. Most of the event will take place as
lectures, allowing questions and discussion among participants.

There will also be panel discusions, and the possibility of small group
activities.

The event will also include an attractive social program.

The deadline to propose workshops to be included in our programme or
another subject is september 7th.

Keep Working
Keep the promise 2015!

the THEaMErs.

YOURS FOR THE ASKING!

Dear Friend,

This letter may come to you as a surprise due to the fact that we have

not yet met. I humbly crave your indulgence in sending you this mail.

I have to say that I have no intentions of causing you any pains so i

decided to contact you through this medium .As you read this, I don't

want you to feel sorry for me, because, I believe everyone will die

someday.

My name is Shehu Abdul, a merchant in Dubai, in the U.A.E. I have been

diagnosed with prostate and esophageal Cancer that was discovered very

late due to my laxity in caring for my health. It has defiled all form

of medicine and right now, I have only about a few months to live

according to medical experts. I have not particularly lived my life so

well,

as I never really cared for anyone not even myself but my business.

Though I am very rich, I was never generous, I was always hostile to

people and only focus on my business as that was the only thing I cared

for. But now I regret all this as I now know that there is more to

life than just wanting to have or make all the money in the world. I

believe when God gives me a second chance to come to this world I would

live my life a different way from how I have lived it. Now that I know

my

time is near, I have willed and given most of my properties and assets

to my immediate and extended family members and as well as a few close

friends and Schools in the UAE. I have decided to give alms to charity

organizations, as I want this to be one of the last good deeds I do on

earth. So far, I have distributed money to some charity organizations

in the U.A.E, London and Ireland. Now that my health has deteriorated

so

badly, I cannot do this my self any more. I once asked members of my

family to close one of my accounts and donate the money, which I!

have there to charity organization in Bulgaria; they refused and kept

the money to themselves. Hence, I do not trust them anymore, as they

seem not to be contended with what I have left for them. The last of my

money which is the huge cash deposit that I have with Financial Firm

Abroad .I will want you to help me collect this deposit and dispatched

it to charity organizations and let them know that it is I Shehu Abdul

that is making this generous donation.

I am writing this from my laptop computer in my hospital bed where I

wait for my time to come. I pray that God uses you to support and

assist

me with good heart

God be with you(Masallam).

Shehu Abdul

NB: I will appreciate your utmost confidentiality in this matter until

the task is accomplished as I dont want anything that will jeopardize

my last wish. and Also I

will be contacting with you by email as I dont want anybody to know

because they are always around me.

Financial and Marketing Skills Seminar

A two-day market planning, product planning and financial planning seminar. This business seminar is a practical, and cost-effective version of the multiple-week, multiple-thousand dollar executive MBA programs, offered by some of the major business schools.

We have also conducted this seminar on-site for major companies, including IBM, Sony, Sharp Electronics, Mentor Graphics, BMC Software and many other companies, both large and small. Consequently, we would be happy to discuss an in-house seminar, either standard or customized, for your company.

The participants can attend the first day only ($299.00 per person) or both days ($399.00 per person). We have priced the seminar to make it cost-effective to register groups of people.

Due to the fact, that we conduct this seminar regularly, you can reschedule a seminar date at anytime, and not forfeit the seminar fee.

All seminars begin at 9:00 am and end at 5:00 pm each day.

The locations and dates for our upcoming seminars are:

Boston, MA/Tyngsboro, MA • Boston University Corporate Education Center • July 27-28, 2005

Chicago, IL • Marriott Suites Chicago O'Hare Airport • November 9-10, 2005

Dallas, TX • Dallas/Fort Worth Airport Marriott South • August 3-4, 2005

Los Angeles, CA/Costa Mesa, CA • National University Orange County Airport • December 7-8, 2005

Newark International Airport, NJ • Marriott Hotel Newark Airport • October 19-20, 2005

San Jose, CA • National University San Jose Airport • September 21-22, 2005

We are not affiliated with any university or college. We are a private business consulting company.

The seminar's topics are linked together by two overarching business methodologies:

I. Value-Based Financial Management Methodology

A. To provide a return on investment (ROI) to stockholders, management has to continually increase the value of the business, through producing significant profitable annual sales growth, which generates a sufficient level of free cash flow.

Although, profitability is the necessary condition of a business or a new product, it is not sufficient, because, contrary to conventional business wisdom, profits are not cash. The necessary and sufficient condition of a successful business or a new product is free cash flow, which is the real measure of generated economic value.

B. In addition, the free cash flow has to be at a sufficient minimum level to cover the weighted average cost of capital, the risk adjusted cost of capital or the opportunity cost of capital. In other words, before a company can generate a satisfactory level of free cash flow to increase the value of the business, the company has to invest capital and achieve a ROI greater than the cost of the capital itself.

Hence, looking upon a business as a collection of investment projects, for example, investments in new or existing products, new manufacturing equipment, sales programs, information technology software and systems, etc., the goal has to be to have every investment project generate or save a significant level of free cash flow, and thereby, achieve a sufficient ROI. Accordingly, every investment project can, and has to be measured on a free cash flow basis.

C. To accomplish the above, companies have to measure the correct financial value “drivers,” with the correct “tools.” In addition, the companies have to use the same “tools” to measure all the various types of investment projects, as well as, measuring the business as a whole, and utilize the identical “tools” employed by professional investors, to assist them in making their investment decisions vis-à-vis the company.

Consequently, companies cannot use standard accounting methods to measure ROI, like return on equity (ROE) or return on assets (ROA), which measure substandard value producing activities. Additionally, ROE and ROA cannot be used to measure all the various types of investment projects, and professional investors cannot use them to make successful equity and/or debt investment decisions.

II. Value-Based Product Marketing and Development Methodology

A. Optimize products and prices between buyers, competitors, and internal financial requirements, using an externally driven development process, that is, 1) identify the buyers' problems, needs, and/or the benefits required by the buyers; 2) determine the value to be delivered to the buyers, with emphasis on incremental value delivered via competitive advantages; 3) set prices based on the value delivered, pricing segments analysis, pricing leverage analysis, pricing strategy and/or the marketing strategy; and 4) determine the product development investment and manufacturing costs that can be justified.

B. Identify the business value creating market segments, and the product line development sequencing, through the development of a strategic product marketing plan, that identifies the market segments, price segments, optimum prices, product configurations, product development investments, manufacturing costs, targeted marketing and sales programs, and unique product positionings.

C. Identify the value delivered to the buyers through price segments identification, pricing leverage analysis, competitive value analysis, and classifying features and benefits based on the value they deliver to the buyers, that is, required, persuasive, and preemptive features and benefits, and detrimental, dissuasive, and preemptively dissuasive features.

Amongst, the specific topics presented are: 1) how to identify the value producing market segments for a product, 2) how to quickly evaluate new product or business opportunities, before performing a detailed evaluation, and 3) why you should, and how to calculate the free cash flow, and the return on investment (ROI) generated from a new or existing product investment, a marketing or sales program, an information technology system or a manufacturing automation investment.

On our web site, we list the major product and financial questions answered in the seminar. These questions are especially informative in respect to the overall content presented in the program. If you or your associates can answer these questions today, don't attend the seminar. However, if you or they cannot answer these questions, please register for one of our sessions.

This seminar has been extremely well received by over 10,000 professionals from large, and small companies. As affirmation, see the letters from Sharp Electronics, Manugistics, Advanced Micro Devices, Verizon, Sony, IBM, Varian Associates, MDL Information Systems, and RISE Technology.

In addition, to marketing and financial professionals, the seminar attracts sales, scientific, manufacturing, and engineering managers, who want to deepen their understanding of the subjects covered. It helps them to design and manufacture value-producing products, and to communicate more effectively with their counterparts in the marketing and financial functions.

The seminar provides the participants with “real” business skills that can be applied to their everyday work tasks. One of the major skills being the ability to think “concretely” about ROI, and to actually calculate it for all types of investments, for example, new or existing products, new manufacturing equipment, sales programs, information technology software and systems, etc.

In addition, although, the participants will learn how to evaluate the balance sheet, income and cash flow statements, the financial focus is not on “debits and credits” or “accounting mechanics.” The emphasis is on understanding financial objectives and analysis techniques.

If you want to improve your or your people’s ability to think as product marketing savvy and financially adroit business people, then please register yourself or them for one of our seminars.

We would also be happy to discuss an in-house seminar, either standard or customized, with the associated reduced fee per attendee versus the above fee for our public seminars.

We also conduct an all financial version of this seminar called The Financial MBA Seminar. However, we only conduct this seminar as an in-house session.

Additionally, send us an e-mail , if you would like us to e-mail you an Adobe Acrobat PDF File containing all the information on our web site.
